What to bring back ?

The most valuable treasure that the traveller can bring back home is that which is carried in the heart and the mind. The traveller should develop good habits about what is seen, what is touched and what is taken, along the route. But we all like to bring home something to fire our memories and extend our experiences. Sometimes we find objects or we may receive gifts but most likely they will be purchased.

The traveller must always be aware of how acquisitions are going to be transported back home. If you plan to acquire certain objects, think about how to put them in your luggage. Objects made of cloth, for example, are easily packed. Stone sculptures are not only heavy and may break or break other articles in our luggage. Avoid acquiring heavy objects at the beginning of a trip if they must be carried a long way.

Many attractive items can be acquired in foreign countries that are made from endangered plants and animals. Crocodile skin luggage, python skin boots, ivory or coral jewellery and carvings and tortoise shells are some common items that will be deemed illegal on arriving home. There are more than 40,000 species of animals and plants their regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Objects made from these will be seized and stiff penalties and prison terms of up to five years may be given to those who break these laws. Plants and animals are also subject to agricultural laws. Other limitations apply to fire arms and weapons (even antiques and replicas), alcohol, tobacco, and other materials. Exemptions from duty are generally available for objects brought back. If these exemptions are surpassed be prepared to pay duties and taxes.

In coming months geoNOMAD will explore ideas for mementoes as well as ideas for bringing back and continuing your memorable relationships with people and nature of the places you have visited. Our first topic is:
